A 26-year-old Washington State University student is on trial this week for allegations of raping a female student on campus.

Erick Leal faces charges of felony second-degree and third-degree rape in Whitman County Superior Court, with jury selection commencing Tuesday morning in Colfax.

The allegations state that Leal raped the woman while they were drinking at his apartment on campus in April of the previous year. The alleged victim reported to WSU Police that she lost consciousness and awoke to find Leal sexually assaulting her. She indicated to officers that she felt threatened, believing her life was in danger.

Court documents reveal that Leal allegedly acknowledged the incident during a recorded phone call with the woman, which was authorized by Whitman County Superior Court. In his statements to WSU Police, Leal maintained that the encounter was consensual.

As of now, Leal is still listed as a student at Washington State University on the institution’s official website.
