A head-on collision occurred on U.S. Highway 195, south of Colfax, on Friday night, resulting in the death of a 67-year-old woman from Colfax and injuries to five others.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash was initiated by a 20-year-old woman from Vancouver, Washington, who was driving a station wagon southbound. She attempted an unsafe pass which led to a collision with a northbound sedan. The driver of the sedan, identified as Sandra Hall, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the station wagon, Makala Wheeler, and her four passengers, all 18-year-olds from Vancouver, sustained injuries. Two of the passengers were airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, while Wheeler was transported to Pullman Regional Hospital. The other two passengers were taken to Pullman Regional Hospital and Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics in Colfax.

The accident occurred at approximately 7:00 PM, about five miles south of Colfax, causing the highway to close for several hours with traffic being redirected to State Route 27. The highway was reopened by midnight. Authorities have reported that alcohol or drug impairment was not a factor in the incident.

Emergency responders, including volunteers from the Whitman County Fire District 11 and the City of Pullman Fire Department, along with Sheriff’s Deputies, attended to the scene.
