The City of Pullman is considering the installation of a stoplight at the intersection of South Grand Avenue and Center Street.

During a council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, the Pullman City Council will review a proposal to apply for a state grant from Washington to finance a significant portion of the project. A report prepared for the council indicates that the planning for this stoplight has been ongoing for several years. A study conducted in 2016 assessed the traffic conditions at the intersection and concluded that the volume of traffic justified the need for a stoplight.

City staff have indicated that the traffic signal is expected to enhance safety at the intersection. The project will also include the addition of a crosswalk across Grand Avenue. Center Street serves as a major urban collector road leading from Grand Avenue to Sunnyside Hill.

The estimated total cost for the project is close to two million dollars, with the city aiming to secure a grant of 1.6 million dollars from the state. If the funding is approved, the installation of the new stoplight is projected for 2028, bringing the total number of traffic signals along Grand Avenue in Pullman to nine.
