A Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant was involved in a fatal incident on I90 near Spokane on Saturday morning, being struck by a motorcyclist.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Sgt. Kenneth Salas was responding to a traffic hazard on the interstate when he was hit. A hay bale had fallen off a trailer being towed by a pickup truck traveling eastbound approximately ten miles west of Spokane around 8:00 AM. Sgt. Salas had positioned his patrol car to block the lane and activated his emergency lights.

The motorcyclist, 39-year-old Bobby Robbins from Malden, reportedly did not slow down adequately as he approached the scene. He maneuvered around the patrol car and collided with Sgt. Salas, who was on foot attempting to remove the hay bale.

Sgt. Salas was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, where he later died. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities have stated that there was no evidence of alcohol or drug impairment involved. Robbins sustained injuries and was also taken to Sacred Heart.
