A 51-year-old man from Garfield has entered a guilty plea to charges of felony 2nd degree assault following an incident outside Grumpy’s Tavern.

Fritz Henn pleaded guilty on Friday in Whitman County Superior Court. He was arrested by deputies from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office on May 11th after allegedly pointing a pistol at a motorist in front of the tavern. According to reports, patrons of the tavern intervened and disarmed Henn.

Henn stated to deputies that he was distressed, believing someone had shot his dog, although officials later confirmed that no shots had been fired at the animal. Since his arrest, Henn has completed an inpatient alcohol treatment program.

Judge Roger Sandberg followed the prosecution’s recommendation and sentenced Henn to 5 months in jail. The typical sentencing range for this offense is between 3 to 9 months. Henn was credited for time already served and his treatment, resulting in approximately two and a half months remaining in his sentence. Additionally, he has been placed on probation for one year and is required to continue his substance abuse treatment.
