Washington State University has suspended the recognition of the Gamma Iota Omicron fraternity for the fall semester due to hazing violations.

Recent updates from WSU indicate that during the previous spring, new members of the fraternity were subjected to hazing practices, which included carrying specific items, being blindfolded, and being taken to undisclosed locations where they faced intense verbal confrontations. In addition to the suspension, the fraternity will remain on probation through the following spring semester, and its members are required to participate in anti-hazing educational classes.

This action is in accordance with state law requiring WSU to publicly disclose allegations of violations within Greek organizations. This legislation, known as “Sam’s Law,” was established following the tragic death of WSU student Sam Martinez in 2019, which was linked to alcohol poisoning after attending a party hosted by the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
