The White Pine Fire in North Latah County has expanded to 253 acres.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire is currently 10% contained. It is burning east of State Highway 6, near the Giant White Pine Campground, which is currently closed, along with Laird Park further to the south.

On Sunday, the fire exhibited active behavior, including upslope runs, torching, and a spot fire over Wepah Creek. Five helicopters and one airplane were deployed to combat the flames from the air. Ground firefighters had to temporarily evacuate the area on Sunday due to increased winds caused by thunderstorms. Sprinklers and hose lays on the northern flank of the fire remain in place to help maintain control. A heavy equipment task force is working to establish fire lines and roads for better access to the flames. The presence of large cedar trees and downed timber poses safety challenges for firefighting crews. Cooler temperatures in the coming days are anticipated to help reduce fire intensity.

The Latah County Sheriff’s Office has issued a “be ready to evacuate” order for residents in proximity to the fire. Several forest service roads in the vicinity are closed, and the use of drones is prohibited within a 10-mile radius of the fire. The fire camp is situated on SH6 just north of Harvard, with 126 personnel currently assigned to the response effort. The U.S. Forest Service is leading the operation, supported by the Northern Rockies National Incident Management Team 2. The fire ignited a week ago Sunday, and the cause remains under investigation.
