The Washington Legislature has decided to discontinue funding for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program in the state. This decision was made as part of the final operating budget approved by the majority Democrats in Olympia, amid efforts to address a projected budget shortfall of $16 billion over the next four years.
Previously, the program had received half of its funding from the state, with additional support coming from local library partners. The United Way of Whitman County launched its Dolly Parton Imagination Library program three years ago, delivering over 25,000 free books to approximately 1,300 local children.
The state program had requested $7 million for the next two years. In light of the funding cut, officials are now seeking private contributions to sustain the program across Washington. Donations can be made at https://www.imaginationlibrarywashington.org/donate.
