The University of Idaho has decided to discontinue its efforts to acquire the University of Phoenix, as announced on Tuesday. The university plans to seek permission from the Idaho State Board of Education to terminate the discussions regarding the purchase. This decision is expected to result in significant reimbursements for the University of Idaho, which will cover expenses associated with the acquisition attempt.
The University of Idaho initially received approval from the state board to pursue the acquisition in the spring of 2023. The administration aimed to enhance educational opportunities for Idaho residents through this acquisition. However, the process faced challenges, including a lawsuit from Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador concerning open meetings violations, along with opposition from several state lawmakers. An extension was granted last year to facilitate the completion of the deal by this month.
UI President Scott Green noted that the acquisition efforts had become financially unsustainable and a diversion from the university’s primary objectives, expressing best wishes for the University of Phoenix. The Idaho State Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Thursday to formally conclude the University of Idaho’s attempt to acquire the University of Phoenix.
