The University of Idaho is launching an energy institute aimed at addressing regional energy challenges. The initiative will concentrate on workforce development and enhancing energy literacy.
John Kumm, an alumnus of the university with extensive experience in the energy sector, has been appointed as the executive director. Kumm has 17 years of experience in power generation, transmission, and environmental sciences from a prominent national energy consulting firm.
The institute, located within the College of Engineering, is set to introduce new academic programs that integrate cybersecurity, sustainability, and global energy systems across various disciplines. Plans include the development of certificate, minor, and degree programs, along with laboratory facilities featuring a microgrid test bed for power systems research.
Kumm expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to build on the university’s history of excellence in power system engineering and to engage with future leaders in multiple fields such as agriculture, architecture, business, engineering, law, and natural resources.
The university intends to strengthen existing collaborations with industry partners, including Avista, Idaho Power, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, and Idaho National Laboratory, to promote energy innovation and education.
