Idaho Fish and Game is advising anglers to kill and keep all walleye caught in salmon and steelhead rivers, due to the invasive species’ impact on the local fish populations. The walleye population has been increasing in Idaho, with reports of 80 walleye caught in the Snake River from Hells Canyon to Lewiston last year. Additionally, these predatory fish have been found in the Lower Salmon River extending to Riggins in central Idaho, with some individuals reaching sizes of up to 30 inches.
Starting July 1st, new regulations will permit spearfishing for walleye and smallmouth bass in Clearwater Region rivers, with no restrictions on bag, length, or possession limits. This initiative aims to manage the increasing walleye population, which is migrating into Idaho from Washington via the Snake River.
Anglers are encouraged to report any walleye catches to the Idaho Fish and Game office in Lewiston. They are requested to provide details such as the location of the catch, the size of the fish, and to submit a photo. Reports can be emailed to [email protected].
