Whitman Public Health has issued a health advisory regarding avian influenza, which has been identified in wild geese in Whitman County this fall.

Residents are advised against approaching or handling sick or deceased wildlife. Individuals who have had exposure to birds are encouraged to use personal protective equipment, such as N95 respirators and gloves. Additionally, hunters are recommended to wear protective gear when handling wild game and to ensure that all meat is cooked thoroughly.

Sick or dead wild animals should be reported to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife through their online platform, while domestic birds can be reported to the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Sick Bird Hotline at 1-800-606-3056.
