A significant wildfire, named the Central Ferry Fire, is currently burning south of Dusty in Whitman County. The fire was mobilized at 1:30 PM today following a request from Chief Peter Appel of Whitman County Fire District 13 in Onecho. Residents near the fire are being advised to prepare for potential evacuations.

The blaze is located north of Central Ferry on the Snake River, along State Route 127, and is advancing east toward Penewawa Road. The fire reportedly began around 11:30 AM Wednesday when an old motorhome caught fire while ascending from the river. Strong winds contributed to the rapid spread of the flames into the surrounding canyon and fields, with local officials estimating that approximately 6,000 acres have been affected.

Firefighting efforts include the use of several airplanes and a helicopter, which are sourcing water from the Snake River. To facilitate these operations, authorities have closed the river to boat traffic. Additionally, a county-wide alert has been issued by dispatchers for available fire units to assist in combating the fire. State Route 127 south of Dusty is currently closed due to the fire’s proximity, which is impacting stubble fields atop the ridge as well as grass and brush within the canyons. The fire originated in Whitman County Fire District 8, which is supported by volunteer firefighters from LaCrosse.
