Washington State University has announced a significant $1.5 million bequest from Harold “Hal” and Wilma Stellingwerf, aimed at supporting the Crimson Opportunity Scholarship. This donation represents the largest contribution in the history of the scholarship.
Hal Stellingwerf attended Washington State College, now known as Washington State University, thanks to the assistance of a high school teacher who covered his tuition. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering and subsequently worked at the Bremerton Naval Shipyards during World War II.
Wilma Stellingwerf pursued her education at Central Washington University, where she trained as a fifth-grade teacher and later became a librarian.
The couple met in Wenatchee, Washington, and were married in 1951. They built a home that Hal affectionately named “Wilma’s House,” where they spent their lives together.
Their estate gift is intended to support students at their alma maters and facilitate access to educational opportunities for future generations.
The Crimson Opportunity Scholarship was established in 2009 and aims to provide financial assistance to WSU students who demonstrate financial need, regardless of their background, field of study, or campus location.
