The federal government is in the process of updating the floodplain map for Whitman County.

The existing flood map is based on topographic data from the late 1970s. The new maps from FEMA utilize digital technology to improve the accuracy of flood predictions. This update also accounts for changes in local streams and rivers since the 1970s, influencing flood flow patterns.

A FEMA representative presented the proposed flood maps to the Whitman County Commissioners recently. The updated floodplain will expand in some areas while contracting in others. Notable expansions include regions in North Colfax along the Palouse River and downtown Pullman, where there is an increased risk of flooding from the South Fork of the Palouse River. The updated FEMA flood map will impact property owners’ requirements for flood insurance. The proposed flood maps for Whitman County are available for public viewing online.

FEMA will conduct public workshops next week to address any questions regarding the maps. Meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Public Service Building in downtown Colfax, and Thursday, February 13th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Pullman City Hall. Property owners will have the opportunity to appeal the new floodplain designations during a two-month period this spring. The new flood maps are expected to be finalized and adopted by the summer of 2026.
