Fire Destroys Moscow Home

A home in Moscow was impacted by a fire on Sunday morning.

City of Moscow Volunteer Firefighters responded to the incident on Conestoga Street around 5:30. Crews extinguished a fire in the basement that spread to the first floor. Two adults and a child were present when the fire ignited. A smoke alarm alerted them, allowing for a safe escape. One occupant experienced minor smoke inhalation but declined hospitalization. Two cats died in the fire, while volunteers rescued a cat and a dog. The dog was taken to the Washington State University vet hospital for treatment.

Chief Brian Nickerson indicated that the fire likely started in the basement near the furnace, but the specific cause is still under investigation.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the occupants who were displaced by the fire.

Additionally, a Moscow fire truck was involved in a minor incident while responding to the fire. The driver lost control on slick conditions and slid into a yard, hitting a tree. There were no reported injuries, and the engine sustained minimal damage. Volunteers cleared the limbs that fell from the tree, and the department plans to follow up with the property owner after the snow melts to assess any potential additional damage to the yard.
