A 24-year-old former student from Washington State University, Isaac Andrade, was sentenced to the maximum one year in jail following his conviction for felony 3rd degree rape. The sentencing took place on Friday after Andrade was found guilty by a Whitman County Superior Court jury in May.

The incident occurred in November 2023 after Andrade met the victim at a fraternity party and took her to his apartment to watch a movie, where the assault took place. The victim sought help immediately after the incident by running to a neighboring apartment.

Due to Andrade’s lack of prior criminal history, the standard sentencing range was between 6 and 12 months. The prosecutor’s office, along with the victim and her family, advocated for the maximum sentence, while Andrade’s defense attorney requested the minimum of 6 months.

Judge Roger Sandberg sided with the victim’s request, sentencing Andrade to one year in jail and placing him in custody immediately. Additionally, Andrade was placed on probation for one year, required to register as a sex offender for a decade, and ordered to pay restitution. Andrade’s attorney has indicated plans to appeal the jury’s conviction.
