The Idaho State Police are reminding drivers to exercise caution on the roads this Memorial Day weekend as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer commence.
The period from Labor Day to Memorial Day is associated with increased risks for drivers due to heavier travel, summer activities, and potential reckless or impaired driving.
According to ISP, common factors contributing to fatal crashes include speeding, alcohol or drug impairment, inattention, failure to yield, following too closely, and overcorrecting.
During the weekend, ISP troopers will enhance patrols statewide to promote safe driving as the summer season begins.
ISP’s Memorial Day and summer driving tips include:
– Slow Down: Higher speeds result in less reaction time and more severe crashes.
– Drive Sober: Planning ahead is essential. Impairment can occur from alcohol or drugs.
– Stay Alert: Fatigue and distractions can be dangerous on the road.
– Watch for Motorcycles: Riders may be harder to see and more vulnerable.
– Give Space to RVs & Trailers: Larger vehicles require more time and space to stop and maneuver.
– Use Caution in Work Zones: Construction areas necessitate extra caution, and fines are increased in these zones.
– Keep Your Cool: Managing stress in heat and traffic is important to prevent road rage.
