The Idaho Transportation Department has provided a grant to the Latah County Sheriff’s Office for a year-long initiative aimed at addressing aggressive driving behaviors through enhanced patrols and educational programs.

This initiative responds to safety concerns in Latah County, which experiences an average of 438 collisions each year, including eight fatal accidents over the past three years. Data from the LCSO indicates that nearly half of all collisions involve drivers under the age of 24, many of which are deemed preventable.

Deputies will concentrate on addressing behaviors such as speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, failure to yield, and driving too quickly for weather conditions. The program also includes educational outreach, with plans for safe driving presentations at local high schools to encourage responsible driving among young motorists.

The Sheriff’s Office aims to lower collision rates, prevent fatal accidents, and raise public awareness about roadway safety.

Law enforcement will specifically monitor aggressive driving behaviors, including cutting off other vehicles, improper passing, failure to signal lane changes, and hostile actions such as aggressive honking or gestures.
