CORRECTION: Jay Sani is still a student at WSU.
A misdemeanor case involving a Washington State University student accused of assault has been resolved. The case against 24-year-old Gerald Hoff, related to an incident involving 25-year-old WSU student Jay Sani, concluded with a misdemeanor compromise in Whitman County District Court in Pullman. Under state law, such a compromise can occur when the victim indicates they have received satisfaction for their injury, leading to the dismissal of the charge. The agreement was finalized in court under the oversight of Pro Tem Judge Doug Robinson.
The incident occurred on the evening of February 28th, when Sani was wearing a “Take America Back” hat while walking on Colorado Street. Allegedly, former WSU doctoral student Patrick Mahoney grabbed Sani’s hat and threw it into the street, prompting Sani to throw food at Mahoney. Reports indicate that Hoff and Mahoney then responded by physically confronting Sani.
While the case against Mahoney is still pending, with a court date set for August 21st, he was dismissed from his teaching position at WSU. Hoff also lost his hourly job at the university. As of now, all three individuals involved are still registered as students at WSU.
