The Pullman City Council is considering a potential ban on fireworks during home football and baseball games at Washington State University (WSU). This topic was raised by City Councilmember Nathan Weller, who represents Ward 2, located in the northern part of College Hill near the university. Weller expressed his concerns regarding the impact of fireworks on his neighborhood, stating that they have been a significant issue for residents outside of the traditional Fourth of July and New Year’s celebrations.

Currently, Pullman city law permits fireworks usage mainly around the Fourth of July and New Year’s, with a specific exemption for WSU to use fireworks during sanctioned events. At the recent council meeting, Weller was supported by other council members in their exploration of a ban on fireworks at WSU sporting events, while suggesting that the existing allowances for holiday fireworks remain in place. Weller contested the argument that fireworks contribute additional revenue for Cougar Athletics, leading to a heated discussion with Mayor Francis Benjamin.

The Pullman City Council plans to hold a public hearing in the future to gather input from community members regarding the proposed ban on fireworks at WSU football and baseball games.
