Longtime Pullman City Councilman Nathan Weller has reconsidered his proposal to explore a ban on fireworks during Washington State University home football and baseball games. At a recent city council meeting, Weller initially raised concerns brought forth by some of his College Hill neighbors regarding the fireworks displays that take place following select Cougar games. He highlighted issues such as disturbances to residents and the impact on individuals with PTSD. In response to these concerns, Weller had suggested that the city consider a ban on fireworks at WSU events, which gained support from other council members and led to a public hearing scheduled for August 12th to gather citizen feedback on the matter.
However, during a subsequent meeting, Weller shifted his stance. Instead of advocating for a ban, he proposed that the city assist in notifying the community about upcoming fireworks displays. He emphasized that many residents affected by the noise are often unaware of when the fireworks are scheduled. Weller’s suggestion is for the city to use its online platforms to inform the public about these events.
Currently, Pullman city law permits fireworks discharge only on July 4th and New Year’s Eve, with an exemption in place for WSU events.
