The Pullman School Board held a meeting Wednesday night where they voted not to reconsider the elimination of the high school athletics and activities director position, despite receiving significant public support for current AD Wendy Kruger.
Superintendent Dr. Bob Maxwell had previously informed staff that the position was cut due to budget constraints, with responsibilities being reassigned to an assistant high school principal. This decision has led to considerable community opposition, with many locals expressing their support for Kruger, who recently received a statewide service award.
The school board meeting attracted around 150 attendees, many of whom had to watch via live stream in adjacent rooms. Approximately 30 individuals, including students, coaches, and parents, addressed the board, advocating for Kruger to remain in her role as a full-time athletic director. Public comments lasted for over an hour and included emotional testimonials highlighting Kruger’s contributions to the school community.
During the meeting, Board Chair Nathan Roberts requested that the audience refrain from applauding after speakers expressed their support for Kruger. The board met in private for over an hour to discuss the matter, after which they voted on a motion to reconsider the elimination of the position. The vote resulted in a tie, with two members voting for reconsideration and two against, leading to the motion’s failure. No further discussion or explanation of individual positions was provided by board members.
The decision not to reconsider the elimination of the athletics director position means that the previous administrative structure will be reinstated, with the duties reverting to an assistant principal role. This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the district’s financial challenges. Additionally, the seats held by Roberts and another board member are up for election later this year, with candidate filing beginning soon.
