Pullman’s short-term fire chief, Brett Nash, has resigned from his position, citing challenges in implementing change within the Pullman Fire Department. Nash submitted his resignation letter via email to Mayor Francis Benjamin and Interim City Administrator Jeff Elbracht on Monday, and city spokeswoman Meghan Ferrin confirmed the resignation later that day, though she did not provide further details.

A public records request revealed the contents of Nash’s resignation email, in which he expressed, “I don’t feel like I have the ability to control or effect change within the organization,” and noted that his happiness and job satisfaction had been adversely affected.

Nash took over the Pullman Fire Department in February, succeeding longtime Chief Mike Heston, who retired. Prior to joining Pullman, Nash worked as a battalion chief in Henderson, Nevada. In his resignation email, he mentioned that he plans to return home to be with his family, with his last day as Pullman’s Fire Chief set for August 1st.

This resignation marks the latest instance of turnover among top administrative positions in Pullman. Police Chief Jake Opgenorth resigned earlier this year amid a misconduct scandal, and the situation surrounding him led to the resignation of City Administrator Mike Urban, who maintains that he did not resign voluntarily and plans to pursue legal action against the city.

Mayor Benjamin is reportedly in discussions with city leaders this week to strategize on filling the fire chief position.
