Volunteer firefighters responded to a small field fire at a Washington State University research farm located south of Pullman on Monday afternoon.
Whitman County Fire District 12 received the call regarding the fire at WSU’s Spillman Farm on Johnson Road around 1:00 PM. According to Chief Lester Erwin, the fire affected approximately four acres of standing grain in test plots. In an effort to contain the fire, local farmers utilized tractors equipped with discs to create a barrier while volunteer firefighters used brush trucks to combat the flames. The fire was controlled within about ten minutes. Chief Erwin mentioned that the test plots were in the process of being harvested, and it is believed that a spark from the combine may have initiated the fire.
The Moscow Rural Volunteer Fire Department was also summoned to assist in extinguishing the flames.
