Sparks from a truck hauling a trailer led to the ignition of three small wildfires in Southern Whitman County on Saturday night. The Asotin County Fire District 1 Volunteers from Clarkston responded to the incidents near Red Wolf Bridge around 7:30 PM. According to reports on social media, Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Deputies managed to stop the driver at the state line. The sparks caused fires along State Route 128, burning between the highway and the Snake River. Chief Noel Hardin expressed relief that the fires did not cross to the other side of the highway, where they could have threatened the canyon area. He emphasized the current fire conditions in the Lewiston/Clarkston Valley are nearing extreme levels, urging the public to remain vigilant to prevent potential wildfire outbreaks.
