Miscommunication regarding the plans for a new highway junction on the north end of Colfax has resulted in a delay for the project.

The transportation package recently approved by the Washington Legislature includes a provision that postpones the U.S. Highway 195 and State Route 26 interchange project, initially set to begin in October, to 2029. The project’s estimated cost is $13 million.

Local Representative Joe Schmick noted that the delay was influenced by concerns from Colfax businesses, specifically the chamber of commerce, which believed that the construction would negatively impact downtown businesses due to expected detours. The chamber expressed worries that the detour during the two-year project would divert traffic away from Main Street.

However, WSDOT spokesman Ryan Overton clarified that the planned detour will not redirect traffic away from downtown. The project aims to replace the aging US195 bridges over the Palouse River with a single span. During the demolition and reconstruction of the upriver bridge, the adjacent downriver span will accommodate traffic in both directions, and once the new bridge is completed, the older span will be removed. Additionally, the project will include the construction of a roundabout at the junction where the Chevron gas station is currently located.

Schmick emphasized the importance of the community and WSDOT achieving a clear understanding of the project before proceeding. Overton indicated that WSDOT officials will be meeting with Colfax businesses in the near future. The project has been in the planning stages for several years.
