The State of Washington holds an annual trout fishing derby that includes opportunities for young anglers.

Saturday marks the opening of trout fishing in Washington lakes. Each year, the state department of fish and wildlife tags over a thousand fish in select lakes for the derby, which also begins on Saturday. The tags can be redeemed for various rewards, including fishing gear, gift cards, and tickets to Seattle Mariners games. This year’s derby features Garfield Pond in Whitman County, where only anglers aged 14 and younger are permitted to fish. The derby continues through Halloween.
