The White Pine Fire in North Latah County has expanded to nearly 800 acres, according to the U.S. Forest Service, which reports that containment is currently at 10%. The fire is located north of Harvard and east of State Highway 6 near the Giant White Pine Campground. It is actively burning, with instances of tree torching and spot fires occurring. Aircraft are assisting ground firefighters, with fire retardant being dropped as part of the firefighting efforts.
Several roads within the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest fire zone are closed, including access to the Giant White Pine Campground and Laird Park. A ‘be ready to evacuate’ order has been issued by the Latah County Sheriff’s Office for residents in proximity to the fire.
As of Tuesday, additional firefighters have been deployed to the scene, bringing the total to nearly 300 personnel engaged in firefighting operations. The fire camp is situated on SH6 north of Harvard, and expenditures related to the White Pine Fire have reached nearly 3 million dollars.
The fire ignited last month on Labor Day weekend and initially covered just 13 acres three days after its start.
