Whitman County Public Health is currently investigating a confirmed outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) among the student population at Washington State University (WSU), with five cases reported as of November 13. There have been no reported cases outside of the university community.
Pertussis is a contagious respiratory disease that spreads primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected individual talks, coughs, or sneezes. Initial symptoms resemble those of a cold but can progress to severe coughing episodes, which may result in gagging or vomiting. Infants under 12 months who have existing health issues are particularly vulnerable to severe complications.
Individuals with confirmed cases of pertussis are advised to isolate themselves until they have completed a five-day course of antibiotics. It is recommended that residents verify their vaccination status regarding pertussis (specifically the DTaP and Tdap vaccines) and maintain appropriate hand hygiene practices. Those who have been in close contact with an infected individual are encouraged to consult with their healthcare provider for guidance.
