Washington State University Athletics has announced that it will be discontinuing some of its track and field programs. In a statement released on Monday, Cougar Athletics revealed that the jumping and throwing programs will be cut, and there will be a reduction in sprint and hurdle opportunities. This change indicates a shift in focus towards distance events within the Cougar track program.

The university has stated that it will continue to honor the scholarships of affected student-athletes who choose to remain at WSU. Additionally, reports indicate that three coaches from the Cougar track program were let go as part of this decision.

This move follows a recent budget cut of 4%, amounting to three million dollars, imposed by the WSU Regents on the Cougar Athletic Department. This is the first instance of program cuts since the dissolution of the Pac-12 conference two years ago.
