A Washington State University fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi, has been suspended for five years due to hazing violations. The university’s investigation found that new members were coerced into consuming marijuana and alcohol and faced punitive measures involving cleaning duties and physical activities. These incidents occurred over the last three fall semesters and the spring semester of the previous year. The investigation began last winter, leading to a suspension of the fraternity’s activities in January. Notably, this fraternity was previously sanctioned in 2020 for similar hazing, alcohol, and drug violations.
Additionally, the Sigma Chi fraternity is currently on social probation for reckless endangerment after it was reported that the front doors to their house were chained shut during a social event on January 31st, potentially hindering safe exits during emergencies. This fraternity is also required to complete fire code and safety training with the Pullman Fire Department, following prior sanctions for providing alcohol to minors in the fall of 2023.
Furthermore, a new investigation is in progress concerning the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at WSU, focusing on allegations of hazing, alcohol consumption, and threats or physical harm from October. This fraternity was previously placed on disciplinary probation for supplying alcohol to minors in the fall of 2023.
WSU is obligated by state law to publicly disclose allegations of violations involving Greek organizations on campus, in accordance with “Sam’s Law.” This legislation was established after the death of a WSU student, Sam Martinez, in 2019 due to alcohol poisoning linked to an Alpha Tau Omega party.
