A fraternity at Washington State University, Alpha Sigma Phi, has been suspended while an investigation is conducted into several allegations, including hazing.
The investigation pertains to an incident that occurred last fall, with allegations involving hazing, physical harm, reckless endangerment, and violations related to alcohol and drugs. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the Alpha Sigma Phi house is currently barred from participating in all chapter activities. This particular house was previously sanctioned in 2000 for similar issues related to hazing and substance violations.
Under Washington State’s “Sam’s Law,” WSU is obligated to publicly disclose information regarding allegations of misconduct within Greek organizations. This law was enacted following the death of WSU student Sam Martinez in 2019 due to alcohol poisoning after attending an Alpha Tau Omega party. Recently, the Washington State Court of Appeals determined that WSU bore liability in connection with Martinez’s death.
